In a quiet north Phoenix neighborhood bordering the Phoenix Mountains Preserve, a house that has worn many identities is finally finding a cohesive voice after a nine‑month renovation that reshaped nearly every room.
From Patchwork to Cohesive Design
The residence, built with Santa Barbara‑inspired architecture, sat behind vine‑covered walls and sun‑washed courtyards, its exterior hinting at the promise hidden beneath years of piecemeal remodels. Five owners had added layers of additions, remodels and design trends, leaving the home feeling more like a collection of competing versions than a single, unified space.
When the current owners bought the property, they fell in love with its neighborhood, its structural bones, and the potential to use it as a backdrop for their family’s next chapter. To translate that vision, they enlisted interior designer Pauline Thomas, who set out to uncover what the house wanted to be, rather than impose a new style.
Thomas quickly recognized that the home was not lacking character; it merely needed a clear direction. “This house had been under many different identities,” she said. “Every owner had left their mark, and over time it became a collection of different ideas stacked on top of one another. Our job was to uncover what the house wanted to be all along.”
The renovation touched almost every room. Bathrooms were reconfigured, flooring refreshed, lighting reconsidered, and the kitchen reimagined. Original wood‑beamed ceilings were painted to lighten their visual weight, while a stone fireplace was expanded and lime‑washed after the team discovered leftover stone from the original installation on the property.
Existing artwork was revitalized through a custom‑painted triptych inspired by the husband’s Pacific Northwest roots.

Bold Choices in Unexpected Spaces
One of the most striking transformations occurred in a space that had been a forgotten, enclosed patio. Tucked behind an arched doorway, the former patio now serves as a media room that feels more like a jewel box than a typical entertainment area. A bold wallcovering in swirling shades of deep blue and green creates a moody backdrop for elegant white cranes that appear to drift across the walls.
“The space was begging for something bold,” Thomas explained. “It took a little convincing because the wallpaper is dramatic, but once everyone committed to the vision, it was a complete transformation.” The room now features intimate theater seating and rich wood architectural details, making it a secret hideaway that stands as a defining moment of the project.
Lighting emerged as the unifying thread throughout the home. Early in the process, the owners emphasized how important lighting was to them, giving Thomas the chance to treat each fixture as a design statement. A delicate brass piece floats above the entry, welcoming guests with a warm glow, while dramatic pendants anchor gathering spaces, and textured, organic forms echo the new Mediterranean look.
Compared to similar renovation projects in the Phoenix area, this home’s transformation stands out for its emphasis on listening to the structure’s history rather than erasing it. While many remodels prioritize sweeping modern overhauls, the approach here balanced preservation with contemporary updates, echoing a broader trend toward respecting a building’s original narrative while making it functional for today’s families.
